It's been announced today (12th November) that the proposal to move the intensive care beds from the Burns Units at Whiston Hospital and Alder Hey is now "off the table".
The announcement, by a government minister, follows a huge campaign against the plans across Merseyside.
Garston and Halewood Lib Dems collected hundreds of signatures from across South Liverpool and Knowsley as part of the campaign.
Says Lib Dem PPC Paula Keaveney: "We all know just how important it is to get treatment quickly when it comes to burns injuries. Yet the scheme under consideration by Labour's Strategic Health Authority would have involved moving the intensive care beds to Manchester or out into Yorkshire. I'm delighted that people power has paid off in this case and I want to say a big thank you to the people who signed the petition and got their friends, relatives and neighbours to sign too. I have never seen such a quick response "
Although today's announcement is good news, campaigners will be keeping an eye on the situation to make sure that the proposal doesn't re emerge some time down the line. The letter from the health authority makes it clear that future reviews may re introduce planned changes.
