Campaigners against a waste dump in Netherley have won their battle.
Plans for a site by the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) caused anger among residents in the Holt Lane area as well as opposition from businesses already based at the site.
Liverpool City Council told the authority it would not let it use the land. Local residents collected petitions, lobbied the waste authority and argued hard that there would be major problems if the scheme went ahead.
Yet the votes of Labour members on the waste authority meant the organisation pushed ahead with the plans.
When planning permission was turned down, MWDA appealed.
Now however the planning inspectors say that MWDA was wrong and the Holt Lane site should not become a dump.
It's good news for local residents and all those who have campaigned against the scheme. Says local Lib Dem Tom Marshall: "The community who fought back against this scheme have done brilliantly and I am glad to have played my part in the campaign. Holt Lane was simply the wrong site for this facility. Now I hope the Labour bosses at MWDA will have a proper look for sites which are not down narrow roads near people's houses"
