Liverpool Liberal Democrats have chosen to highlight skills, training and employment at the next meeting of the City Council (9 July). A call for a Skills Summit will be made by leader Cllr Warren Bradley. The full text of the motion is below.
"This Council calls for a 'City Wide Skills Summit' to discuss the future employment opportunities for the young and the long term unemployed in the City.
This Council believes that the sustainability of Liverpool's economy depends upon providing all residents with the opportunity to develop their skills and their aspirations to fill and create new jobs and break the worklessness cycle.
Council notes the concerns of all the Core Cities in England who feel more should be done to offer the levers of change to local authorities with resources being released to pilot schemes
Council calls upon residents, young people, business leaders, teachers, elected members and voluntary organisations to work together to set a new skills agenda for Liverpool.
This Council believes that a skills agenda driven by the 5 key economic drivers:
1. Competitiveness
2. Connectivity
3. Thriving Neighbourhoods
4. Sense of Place
5. Health and Wellbeing.
will provide employment and wealth for Liverpool residents as well as providing local business and potential investors with the skilled work force they need to be successful.
Council requests that the Chief Executive and Liverpool Vision establish a Skills Summit with representatives from partner organisations and local residents to bring forward a new skills agenda."
