Free public event and activities to celebrate World EnvironmentDay
energy consumption and promote benefits of cycling, physical activity
and healthy eating
recycled materials (11.30am to 1.30pm)
Merseytravel and a host of other environmental champions will be
celebrating World Environment Day this Thursday - and eco-friendly
Merseysiders are being invited to join in the fun. The organisation is
working alongside The Environment Agency and Liverpool Culture Company
to host a free World Environment Day event in Williamson Square in
Liverpool City Centre between 10am and 4pm.
As well as free giveaways and interactive activities, visitors can get
free energy surveys, information and advice on issues such as energy
saving, grants or volunteering. This year the UN World Environment Day
theme is climate change and how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Merseytravel is bringing along a "cycle smoothie maker" to highlight the
amount of energy needed to power the smoothie machine without mains
electricity. The aim of the cycle-smoothie maker is to promote cycle use
and healthy eating, with each person using pedal power to blend fresh
fruit into his or her own drink. All the fruit is fairly traded,
organically produced or locally sourced.
Liverpool Culture Company has organised for Urban Strawberry Lunch to
play music on their instruments made from recycled materials from
11.30am to 1.30pm. The organisations attending this year are
Merseytravel's Environment Team, Liverpool City Council (with their
waste caravan), The Environment Agency, Energy Projects Plus (giving
away energy saving light bulbs), Merseyside Biobank, BTCV,
Faiths4Change, Friends of the Earth and the cycle-smoothie maker.
