Everybody needs good neighbours!!!

April 4, 2008 12:00 AM

The search is on for unsung heroes who make their neighbourhood a better place to live.

The Liverpool Culture Company and Liverpool City Council are asking local residents to nominate people with real community spirit for the Liverpool's Best Neighbour competition. The winner will be awarded four VIP tickets for the start of the Tall Ships' Races in July - one of the summer's biggest events.

Anyone living within the council's boundaries is eligible to be nominated for the competition. Organisers are looking for entries that reflect all aspects of what it means to be a good neighbour; ranging from tackling anti-social behaviour and promoting community cohesion to simply looking out for the elderly or vulnerable.

The winner will be presented with their prize during a special reception at Liverpool Town Hall on May 12, when Liverpool will officially launch this year's European Neighbours' Day celebrations. Established in France in 1999, European Neighbours' Day annually engages more than 7.5m participants across 28 countries. This year's festivities - which will take place across the continent on May 27 - are the first to be officially recognised by the European Commission following its recent confirmation as patron of the event.

Liverpool's own programme of events for European Neighbours' Day will include neighbourhood showcases of work created as part of the Four Corners projects, in which residents produce artwork celebrating their local community. There will also be a wider programme of activity hosted by Liverpool's Registered Social Landlords (RSLs).

To nominate someone for the Best Neighbour competition, people need to write a maximum of 200 words on why their neighbour deserves the award, and send to: Liverpool Best Neighbour Award, Liverpool Culture Company, Municipal Buildings, Dale Street, Liverpool, L2 2DH. The closing date for entries is April 28 2008. Winners will be informed on Friday, May 2.

. Liverpool's Best Neighbour competition is organised by the Liverpool Culture Company, in conjunction with Liverpool City Council's Neighbourhood Services and Liverpool's Registered Social Landlords.
