Two Lib Dem Councillors are calling for Liverpool commemorations of the 100 year anniversary of the law that introduced the first state old age pension in the UK.
The National Insurance Act of 1908 was a radical measure which effectively began the welfare state.
Allerton and Hunts Cross Lib Dem representatives Flo and John Clucas are calling for a commemoration in a motion to the City Council. The motion reads:
"In view of the centenary of the Liberal Government's National Insurance Act of 1908, which set up the first old age pension in the UK and therefore began the welfare state.
Council therefore requests: -
to commemorate the event and the part played by Liverpool citizens, such as Charles Booth;
to campaign to ensure that the pension keeps faith with the original basis of the act, which was to have the state pension at 25 percent of the average wage, the cost of keeping a person for a week, and increase thereafter;
to remember with pride the part played by the Liberal Government of the day and the succeeding Liberal administrations in providing for its citizens; and
that it regrets the fall in the value of the pension and calls for it to be index linked"
The next City Council meeting takes place on 26th March. Information about these meetings, and other council meetings, is available at www.liverpool.gov.uk
