Commenting on reports that ministers are meeting energy companies to ensure the wider use of 'social' tariffs to reduce fuel poverty, Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary, Steve Webb said:
"The energy companies are receiving a massive £9bn bonus thanks to the European Emissions Trading Scheme, yet they still seem happy to leave millions of people languishing in fuel poverty.
"The Government and Ofgem must ensure that social tariffs are available to all pensioners and those on benefits to ensure no one is left in the cold.
"If the energy companies refuse to comply, then ministers must follow through with their threat to introduce a windfall tax on this massive bonus
