Chinese New Year events in Liverpool

February 9, 2008 8:19 PM

Liverpool is home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe. Chinese New Year is celebrated at the Chinese Arch on Nelson Street, and '08 is the Year of the Rat.

Prepare to be mesmerised by dancing dragons, unicorns and lions, special firecracker performances and Tai Chi demonstrations. It is also a great opportunity to enjoy Chinese food and traditional New Year's delicacies.

Programme of Events on Sunday.

Sunday Feb 10th 2008 Street Parade

Dragon, Unicorn & Lion Dances

Time: 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. - Liverpool Chinatown.

The celebrations really start to take off when the dragons, lions and unicorn arrive at the streets of Chinatown to greet the Community. Many of our fine shops and restaurants will be open for you to further your Chinese New Year experience.

Firecracker Display

Time: 1p.m. - Great George Square.

Watch the spectacular firecrackers display. Of course, there is also music, traditional Chinese

costumes and the 'Lucky Man' handing out red envelopes to children.

Urban Strawberry Lunch

Time: 10:00 a.m. onwards - St Luke's Church.

Come join in the music workshops, decorations and traditional dance and family activities! Urban

Strawberry Lunch are a group who make great music from virtually any object, anywhere. Using

instruments made from junk, they create music that fills the air with driving rhythms, pulsating bass lines and sinuous melodies.
