Belle Vale Lib Dem Councillor Tom Marshall is calling on the Merseyside Fire Authority to think again about its plans to downgrade fire stations and Belle Vale and Allerton.
The Labour controlled authority announced that it was thinking of changing the two fire stations into LLAR stations. That means fewer fire officers and no fire officers on site during the night. Instead the staff live nearby.
Horrified at the suggestions, Tom launched a petition which hundreds of local people signed. Says Tom:
"downgrading our fire stations will put lives at risk. If it takes longer to get to a fire, then obviously the chance of putting it out quickly is a lot less"
Despite Tom's petition however, the Labour controlled authority recently voted to go ahead with the downgrade.
Now Tom is calling on the authority to think again.
"It's about saving lives. The decision makers could change their minds. I am urging them to back down before it is too late"
In response to Tom's campaign, Labour Councillors reported him to the Standards Board for England, the body that oversees Councillors'
behaviour. They claimed Tom was scaremongering
But the Standards Board has said that Tom is innocent. And coverage in the local media shows that Tom has been correct all along.
Says Tom: "I am trying to save lives. They are trying to play politics. People in Belle Vale deserve better"
Tom is supported in his campaign by the Fire Brigades Union.
