Post offices to go - despite local opposition

January 23, 2008 12:00 AM

Royal Mail Post BoxPost offices in South Liverpool and Knowsley are to close despite campaigns to save them.

A prospective closure list was announced last year, but residents and councillors were told that there would be a meaningful consultation period so that local people could have their say.

Despite a series of campaigns however, the closures are to go ahead.

Post offices in South Liverpool and Knowsley to close include those on Thurne Way in Gateacre, on Aigburth Road and Baileys Lane in Halewood.

Says Lib Dem spokesperson Paula Keaveney:

"I really wonder what the meaning of consultation is. In many cases local people were appalled at the prospect of closure and worked hard to change minds. Lib Dem Campaigners collected huge numbers of signatures on petitions. Clearly there was never any intention to listen to local people's views."

The Post Office network has seen many outlets threatened since the gradual withdrawing of government services from the Post Office.

Says Paula: "The government, by withdrawing these services and by not recognising the importance of the network, is hitting local people hard. They clearly don't care"
