At a meeting of Halewood Town Council last week (6 December 2007) Labour
councillors voted against a motion to oppose the closure of Bailey's Lane
Post Office in Halewood, refusing to help protect this vital service for the
local community.
The resolution, proposed by Cllr Harry Birch and seconded by Cllr Dave
Smithson, rejecting the proposed closure of the Bailey's Lane post office
was passed by eight votes to three, split along Party lines with all Liberal
Democrat members supporting the motion.
Cllr Harry Birch, who has been leading the local campaign against the
proposed closure, said: "It is very disappointing that despite my calls for
a united approach to this gradual demolition of local services that our
Labour members felt unable to support our resolution to oppose the planned
closure.
"Since the consultation period opened we have collected literally hundreds
of signatures from local residents who are opposed to the proposed closure
of Bailey's Lane post office.
"The post office provides a vital service to our community and is a great
shame that the Labour councillors appear unable to listen to what local
people are telling them and unwilling to represent their views in opposing
this planned closure,." Cllr Birch added.
Cllr Dave Smithson, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, added: "I was
shocked that after recently producing a leaflet locally appearing to support
the opposition to the proposed closure that Labour councillors did not
support this resolution!
"It will be very interesting to see how these Labour councillors vote this week (12 Dec) when Knowsley Borough Council debate a similar motion that has been
tabled by the Labour Leader of the Council!!"
