Responding to the publication of the Transparency International Global Corruption Barometer, Acting Liberal Democrat Leader and Shadow Chancellor Vince Cable said:
"British politics is in crisis and this report is further evidence that political parties and parliament are seen as corrupt. There is an urgent need for legislation on party funding and greater transparency in our political system.
"It is no wonder that most British people think that the Government is ineffective in tackling corruption. Ministers have received a serious warning for not complying with corruption legislation; still not produced the 2007/08 action plan for tackling corruption; and failed to respond to repeated requests from Washington for papers on the SFO's Saudi inquiry.
"Ministers happily go around the world lecturing on the virtues of honest and transparent government procurement. This Government should get its own house in order before it preaches to others."
