Fire services in major cities like Liverpool and London are facing massive budget cuts over the next three years.
Changes to the way funding is allocated to fire authorities by the Government could see the seven metropolitan fire authorities lose up to £30million of funding, a 6% budget cut.
Fire authorities from Greater Manchester, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Tyne and Wear, West Midlands, West Yorkshire and London will be affected.
The proposed new formula for the Revenue Support Grant reduces the weighting for deprivation, hitting hardest the metropolitan fire authorities which serve the poorest areas.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Local Government Spokesperson, Tom Brake MP said:
"The Government's fire funding proposals are in chaos.
"Official research has shown that ministers have underestimated the extra funds needed by poorer areas that are at a greater risk.
"It is outrageous for the Government to now cut fire service funding to some of the most deprived areas of the country."
