Garston and Halewood Lib Dems have welcomed the results of an opinion poll on ID cards, published today.
The Populus Poll in the Times newspaper shows a majority of people opposing the introduction of ID cards.
The result follows the recent government fiasco in which confidential personal information about millions of people was "lost" by a government department.
Says Garston Lib Dem Spokesperson, Paula Keaveney:
" ID cards are wrong in principle and wrong in practice. They will not prevent crime. They will not prevent terrorism. And the latest government mess up shows that they can potentially cause major problems with our data. But even without all these practical problems, ID cards are simply wrong in principle. Forcing people to have these cards changes the relationship between the state and the citizen. We should not stand for that"
The Lib Dems are running a national petition against the introduction of ID Cards. This can be found via the national website at www.libdems.org.uk or by using the button on the navigation bar of this website.
