Liberal Democrats in Netherley and Belle Vale are calling on the Labour Party to abandon its plan to put a dump opposite people's houses.
The scheme has been drawn up by the Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority which is controlled by the Labour Party on Merseyside.
The scheme involves a centre for waste being set up on the Holt Road industrial estate, very near some residential properties.
Local Lib Dem Councillor Tom Marshall has been leading a team collecting signatures to oppose the scheme. He plans to take his fight to the planning committee and beyond.
Says Tom:
"We all know that South Liverpool needs more facilities to get rid of
waste. But the Holt Road site is simply the wrong place. It may be an industrial estate but its very near houses. What's more the extra
traffic this would generate could be a major problem in this area. What the Waste Disposal Authority needs to do is to have another look at
different locations and make sure that people are properly consulted"
The Waste Disposal Authority is made up of representatives from the five Merseyside local authorities. The Labour party have a majority of the councillors and so the authority is run by Labour.
