The Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority (Merseytravel) members meet later this month to decide who'll be running the authority.
The members are all Councillors who represent the five local authorities on Merseyside. Councils send along Councillors from political parties depending on political control and the results of the elections in May.
At the Annual General Meeting of the Authority (28th June) the Councillors will elect the Chair of the authority, in effect deciding which political group will be in control.
As a result of the elections on May 3rd, an extra Lib Dem Councillor has been added to replace a Conservative. This means there are nine Lib Dems, seven Labour and two Conservatives.
Last year seven Labour members combined with three Conservatives to keep out the largest group - the Liberal Democrats. This year its hoped this back-door deal will not happen.
Says Lib Dem Group Leader, and Councillor for Cressington, Peter Millea:
" This year we hope that the Conservatives will not see fit to put the smaller group into power, which after all would be against the wishes of the electorate on Merseyside and against their own leader's stated aims.
"I, and my group, are keen to put into practice our ideas and priorities for public transport in our area. Being a public transport user myself I know how important this is. I am now hopeful that democracy will prevail and that a Lib Dem will be elected to chair this authority when we meet later this month".
