Around 15 million people could rebel against ID cards.
That's according to documents released by the Home Office after a Freedom of Information request.(source Times Newspapers).
The documents say people could rebel by refusing to provide information or to produce the cards.
The first ID cards are due to be provided in 2009, but there are government plans to make the scheme compulsory by 2014 if Labour wins the next General Election.
Says Lib Dem Spokesperson Paula Keaveney:
"The ID cards scheme is flawed in so many ways. It is expensive. It will do nothing to prevent crime or terrorism, which after all carry on now with no ID cards, and it will enable the state to get more control of citizen's lives. There is still a little time for the government to think again. Let's hope it does"
