Lib Dems on Liverpool City Council last night (Wednesday 4 April) called on the government to think again about making blind and visually impaired people able to claim extra Disability Living Allowance.
A motion to the council, moved by Speke Garston Councillor Paula Keaveney, drew attention to the fact that under the DLA scheme, visually impaired people can only claim the lower rate mobility component of £16 50. The Lib Dems believe that blind and visually impaired people should be entitled to the higher rate - which is £43.45.
A campaign on this issue is currently being run by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB).
The motion originally tabled by cllr Mike Storey, was approved unanimously by the full council.
