Labour Councillors and the Labour government are calling for Liverpool residents' bins to be emptied every two weeks.
This would replace the weekly collection of household rubbish, meaning people would have to store rubbish in their home, in their yard or wherever else they store it for an extra week.
Lib Dems on the City Council have branded the plans as a "Rats Charter". Some parts of the UK already have a fortnightly collection, and in those places residents have reported increased rats and maggots as well as the smell that goes along with uncollected refuse.
Says local Lib Dem Councillor, Peter Millea:
"When Labour last ran our City they even used Garston Park as a Municipal Tip with people having to bring their own rubbish to dump it on the playing fields"
Lib Dem Council leaders have pledged that Liverpool will not move to fortnightly bin collections while the Lib Dems are running the City.
