Liberal Democrat Councillors are calling on the Home Office to fund the extra police needed for Capital of Culture year in 2008.
A bid from the police authority, supported by all the Merseyside Councils, was made to the government for funds for a year for extra police officers.
But this was turned down by the Home Office.
Members of Liverpool City Council heard last night (6th December) that this failure to fund the police needed was in stark contrast to the government's willingness to support the Olympic Games, whatever that might cost.
