The government has for the first time given details of how much it will be spending on its ID card scheme. It will cost 5.4 billion pounds to set up and run the scheme for the first ten years.
To put this into context, this is the sum that Gordon Brown said that the developed world should be spending to eliminate the AIDS pandemic in poorer countries.
Garston Liberal Democrats have condemned the government over its announcement.
Says local Lib Dem spokesperson, Paula Keaveney: "This is such an amazingly high price. I am against ID cards because of their effect on our rights and liberties as citizens. But quite frankly even those who support the concept should be against the scheme based on these figures"
