Campaigners against the government's ID card plans are calling on people to renew their passports now to avoid being forced to have an ID card. The move would delay ID cards for those who renew, and campaigners also hope if enough people act then the build up of renewal requests will send a clear message to the Home Office.
Already the Lib Dem Home Affairs spokespeople in the Commons have applied to renew their passports as part of the protest.
Government plans for ID cards have been pushed along despite a high number of protests from both inside and outside Parliament. Lib Dems, and other campaigners, believe ID cards and the database that goes with them will be illiberal, intrusive and expensive. What's more a long list of experts have explained that the system will not help cut crime or prevent terrorism.
