Lib Dem sports scheme means huge increase in children taking part.

May 26, 2006 9:04 PM

SwimmingA scheme introduced by Lib Dem controlled Liverpool City Council has led to huge increases in the number of children taking part in sport. The scheme, which gives all under 17s the right to a free pass to council leisure centres, was launched at the beginning of May. And in just a few weeks attendances have soared.

Across the City there has been a 47 per cent increase in the number of children and young people using the centres with a 59 per cent increase in the numbers taking part in swimming.

At Garston leisure centre the increase has been even more dramatic, with 52 per cent more children using the facilities and a massive 71 per cent increase in swimming pool use.

The council is spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on the scheme which aims to increase opportunities for children and young people and to make access to sport easier.

Information about the scheme has been given out through schools, but any family which has missed out can apply for passes at their local leisure centre.

Says Paula Keaveney, one of the Lib Dem Councillors in Garston:

"This is brilliant. It's giving children and young people a chance to take part in more activities without stretching family budgets. What's more it may make some of the participants get more involved in sport generally, with all the benefits that brings for health and fitness"
