A Lib Dem Council scheme for free access to swimming pools and sports centres has been launched this month.
Children and young people under 17 are all entitled to a Future Lifestyles card, which they can show at their local council sports centre to get in free. The cards are being issued through schools and being given directly to each pupil who wants to take part. Anyone who misses out at school can apply at a sports centre.
The scheme has been designed to give children the chance to get more exercise and to take part in sports they might not normally do. It's also hoped that the scheme will reduce the likelihood of anti social behaviour in some areas by providing more activities for children and young people to take part in.
The Lib Dem controlled City Council is spending hundreds of thousands of pounds to make the scheme possible.
Says Lib Dem spokesperson Paula Keaveney; "This is a practical way of providing more opportunities for children and young people in our areas. I hope there will be a huge uptake."
