Lib Dem Leader Menzies Campbell is today (18th March) launching a petition calling on the government to drop the ID cards scheme and invest in policing instead.

Sit Menzies will launch the petition at the North West Liberal Democrat conference.

He will say that police numbers in some parts of the North West are falling. In other parts of the region forces are being made to merge despite local people wanting their police to stay local. And while all this goes on, the government has spent millions of pounds preparing to introduce ID cards.

Liberal Democrats believe that ID cards are illiberal and will not even achieve the aims of combating terrorism and crime. The party believes the money would be better spent on investment in proper policing for all our communities.
