The Government has already spent more than 32 million pounds preparing for the introduction of ID cards.
That's despite the fact that Parliament has not yet said yes to the plans.
The spending was revealed after Lib Dem MP Alistair Carmichael asked a Parliamentary Question. The answer, published in a week when the House of Commons is in recess, showed the level of preparations that have already taken place.
Liberal Democrats in Liverpool have condemned the Government's actions as arrogant and unnecessary.
Says Councillor Paula Keaveney;
"Parliament has not yet passed the ID cards bill. In fact there is a very real chance that there will be changes or defeats/ But the government is so determined to persist with this illiberal plan that it is spending money regardless of what people, or Parliament, want.
More information about Lib Dem policies on ID cards is available at
www.libdems org.uk. There are also a number of organisations campaigning against ID cards. Information is available from the national organisation Liberty.
