Liberal Democrats in South Liverpool have condemned the decision by MPs to press ahead with ID cards.
The vote in the Commons linked ID cards to passport and driving license applications, meaning that the cards will be compulsory for most people in the UK - unless they want to give up the ability to drive and to travel.
Says Lib Dem spokesperson Paula Keaveney: "This is the introduction of ID cards by stealth. Rather than choose whether to hold a card, those of us renewing passports or getting driving licenses will get ID cards whether we want them or not. This makes a mockery of the government's claim that ID cards are not compulsory"
The Bill now goes back to the House of Lords. Already some Lords have said they will try to change the Commons' decision.
