The man charged by the government with reporting on the ID cards scheme has said there is no evidence that ID cards will prevent terrorism.
Lord Alex Carlile, QC, said that ID cards would not have prevented the terrorist outrages in London last year. Neither would they have prevented other terrorist incidents.
Lord Carlisle said it was important to take the civil liberties arguments into account.
Liberal Democrats in Liverpool have been campaigning against the introduction of ID cards for some time now. The party argues that the cards are simply a way of the authorities being able to keep a closer eye on citizens.
The story about Lord Carlile is available in more detail on the BBC news website - www.bbc.co.uk (select news and politics).
