Liberal Democrats in Garston have criticised government minister Lord Falconer, the Lord Chancellor, for saying that ID cards should be made compulsory
The Labour minister made the statement on the BBCs Any Questions programme. The discussion followed votes against the government ID card plans in the House of Lords.
Says Garston Lib Dem spokesperson Paula Keaveney:
"The government tried to sell the ID cards idea by saying it would all be voluntary. Now the cat is out of the bag. There's now even more reason to fight these plans. ID cards will be expensive and will do nothing to deal with crime or terrorism. That they will do is enable the government to spy on what citizens are doing. The scheme must be stopped".
