The Government's plans to introduce ID cards have started being discussed in the House of Lords. And it looks like they are to have a rocky ride.
The proposed legislation starts with a general debate called the Second Reading. After that its into committee and the detailed scrutiny. Political commentators expect the criticism to start properly at the detail stage.
No one party has a majority in the Lords, so there is every chance of a government defeat.
Lib Dem Parliamentarians have consistently opposed ID cards and have pledged to carry on doing so.
Says Garston spokesperson Paula Keaveney:
" ID cards are simply illiberal. The government is talking about setting up a huge database with everyones identify details on it. It might start with only a few bits of information, but you can be sure they will want to collect more and more".
The Lib Dems nationally have launched a website for the campaign against ID cards - www.libdems.org.uk/noidcards. Info about other Lib Dem policies is available at www.libdems.org.uk
