Women members of the Liberal Democrats in the North West today (15th October) held a conference to look at ways of getting more women involved in politics.
Meeting in Southport, the members heard from Lib Dem MP John Pugh, one of the six Lib Dem MPs in the North West.
He said that the Lib Dems made progress in the General Election, but more needs to be done to elect more women to Parliament.
Speaking at the same conference, Garston Lib Dem spokesperson Paula Keaveney said:
"Often the problem is that women living real, busy lives don't want to get involved in some of the rather childish things that go on in politics. But we need to convince women that despite some of the window dressing, politics is a serious business which affects everyones lives. There are aspects of it I dislike, like the tendency for negative personal attacks. But there are great things too - like changing a policy for the better or getting stuck in and solving someone's problems".
Women Liberal Democrats is part of the national party and exists to represent women within the party and to encourage more participation. The organsiation also represents the Lib Dems in some external organisations. Information is available from women@libdems.org.uk.
