Liberal Democrats are set to condemn the way the government is operating its tax credit system at the party'sn national conference in Blackpool later this week.
Conference will hear how huge numbers of people claiming tax credits have been wrongly paid by the government, which is now trying to claw back money despite this forcing families into debt.
In Garston constituency for example, around one third of tax credit claimants have been overpaid.... usually through no fault of their own.
Paula Keaveney, Garston's Parliamentary Spokesperson, is acting for a number of people with tax credit problems. She says"
"I raised this whole issue at a City Council meeting, and have continued to raise it since. People I have spoken to are desperate about the government's mess up and it is proving ridiculously slow to sort it all out. The Treasury should accept that if overpayments are the government's fault, the sum should be written off. They should not be pursuing low income families for money that they can't provide".
The Tax Credit debate is scheduled for Sunday 18th September. Information about other conference items is available on the main Lib Dem website at
