The Healthcare Commission has published figures showing that the health service in South Liverpool and other parts of Merseyside are losing out on government funding.
In February the government claimed it would be giving extra cash to Primary Care Trusts in the country's most deprived health care areas. This included South Liverpool (covering Speke, Garston, Netherley and Belle Vale as well as other areas), Knowsley and Central Liverpool.
But the healthcare commission says that government plans will still leave the PCTs underfunded, which means a knock on effect on the service the organisations can provide.
And a government spokesperson has admitted that PCTs will still be underfunded by 2008.
Says Garston Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesperson, Paula Keaveney:
"It's all very well for the government to talk about meeting health needs in deprived areas... words are one thing, deeds another. This underfunding means people in South Liverpool will lose out. At the General Election we were told that Labour was the party of the health service - obviously this was totally inaccurate."
