Liberal Democrats in Liverpool, who sent campaigners across to Stockport to help with the Cheadle by election, were celebrating today.
The by election result saw the Lib Dems not only hold the seat but get an increased share of the vote, with a swing from the Conservatives.
The by election was caused by the death from cancer of MP Patsy Calton. The new MP is former Council Leader, Mark Hunter.
Says Garston Lib Dem, Paula Keaveney:
"This was a significant election in lots of ways. Defending a seat so soon after the General Election, and with the level of negative campaigning indulged in by the Conservatives, was always going to be tricky. It's a testament to our strength on the ground that we managed to run this campaign. The Conservatives were hoping to begin a comeback with this - their number one target seat. They have been dealt a blow, which shows how unlikely they are to recover in the near future".
