Twelve Liverpool schools have today (Friday 24 June) been awarded Fair Trade school status.
At a ceremony at Our Lady's Bishop Eaton School, representatives from the 12 put on displays about the fair trade work they have been taking part in, and collected special Fair Trade school certificates.
Each school winning the award had done a number of things - including holding a fair trade assembly, selling fair trade goods and discussing fair trade in class.
The awards are part of the Liverpool Fair Trade Initiative, which also includes work to encourage more fair trade goods in the retail and catering sector, and work with businesses to encourage them to go fair trade.
Councillor Paula Keaveney, who chairs the City Council's fair trade working group, presented certificates to the schools at todays award. She said:
"This was a fantastic example of children taking the lead. They had really researched the subject thoroughly and had looked into all the issues. I am really impressed with what's been achieved".
Fair Trade schools work will continue with other schools looking for accreditation.
Liverpool City Council has also set up a fair trade website, which aims to list fair trade outlets throughout the City. The website is at
www.fairtrade.liverpool.gov.uk
Information about Fair Trade is also available from the Fairtrade Foundation - a national charity.
