Garston Liberal Democrats have condemned plans, announced in the Queen's Speech this week, for the introduction of ID cards.
Despite considerable opposition before the General Election, the Labour Government has decided to press ahead with its plans, and has included a bill in this session's Parliamentary timetable.
Says Paula Keaveney, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats in Garston:
"Tony Blair said he had been doing a lot of listening. Clearly not. If he had he would realise that not only will ID cards be ineffective - as explained by the head of Interpol - they will also involve spending money best used for putting more bobbies on the beat.
What's more, the whole scheme is just another way of the government keeping tabs on people.
We could be spending to invest in policing. Instead money will go to providing pieces of plastic ID. When it comes to a competition between police or plastic, I know which will be better in fighting crime!"
