Charles Kennedy calling for a fairer deal for pensioners
The Liberal Democrats today launched a mini manifesto for older people, looking at the different ways the party intends to help pensioners.
Welcoming the publication, Paula Keaveney, Parliamentary Spokesperson for the party in Liverpool Garston said
" Around one third of the pensioners in the North West don't claim the money they deserve and need. Often they are put off by the red tape involved, or want to keep their details private. Our plans for a citizen's pension, which is based on residency rather than contributions, will dramatically cut means testing. What's more it will be a lot fairer for women, who currently lose out in many cases".
Around 2 million pensioners in Britain live below the Government's own poverty line. Lib Dem plans include an extra £100 per month, starting with pensioners over 75. The party will also introduce free long term personal care and will abolish Council Tax, replacing it with a fairer system which will mean 6 million pensioners paying nothing at all.
