Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, has asked for more time to consider the plans for a new district shopping centre for Speke.
The plans, which have already been approved by Liverpool City Council, had to go to the Deputy Prime Minister because of the size of the project. He can approve, or call the plans in, which would mean a public enquiry and considerable delay.
Planners should have heard back from the government already, but John Prescott's office has asked for more time, saying they have been "too busy".
Liberal Democrat spokesperson Paula Keaveney has condemned the delay.
She said "People in Speke have been waiting years for decent facilities. Now the government is dragging its feet, which will mean more uncertainty and more waiting. The City Council has done everything in its power to hurry things along, so it is particularly annoying to see a delay caused by someone in London."
"A knock on effect of the delay is that people living in the blocks of flats which will be demolished if the plans go ahead, are going to be spending Christmas with this uncertainty hanging over them. It's really not good enough".
