Liverpool City Council's planning committee today (October 5th) approved plans for a new supermarket and set of shops in Speke.
The new district centre, which will have an entrance from Speke Boulevard, will eventually replace most of the old shopping centre which has become run down and half empty.
Councillor Paula Keaveney, who represents Speke, went to today's planning committee to speak in favour of the plans.
She said people in Speke deserved decent facilities and had been waiting for the development a long time.
But she also asked for reasurances that proper plans would be drawn up to rehouse people in three sets of flats which will have to be demolished.
And she also told developers that there had to be space in the site for traders from Speke market, should they want to move.
Because this is a big development, the plans now go to John Prescott for his approval. If he says yes, work can start once rehousing has taken place. If he calls the plans in, there will have to be a public enquiry.
Says Paula Keaveney:
"People in Speke are hoping the deputy prime minister will not cause any further delays. Speke deserves decent facilities and more jobs, and this development is part of making that happen"
