Woolton Village has won a major prize in the North West in Bloom competition. And Gateacre Village was a runner up in the same awards on its first year of entry.
Woolton Village had entered the competition for a number of years, each year improving its entry. This year it came top in its category of Best Large Village in the North West. It also won the award for the most improved entry across all the many categories in the North West. Woolton Woods and the Park won a merit award.
The winner of the Best Large Village competition is usually from a rural area. This is the first time an urban village has won.
Gateacre Village only had three months to prepare for the competition, but still came away with a runner up award in the Small Village category.
What's more six neighbourhood areas in Woolton won awards in the neighbourhood awards category.
Woolton in Bloom and Gateacre in Bloom entries are organised by groups of local people, including councillors Barbara Mace and Barbara Collinge. Barbara Mace is now working on ways of rolling out the idea to encourage more Liverpool areas to enter.
Says Cllr Barbara Collinge;" This is a wonderful achievement made possible by the efforts of residents, councillors and council staff, all working together to make a difference for the community".
Adds Cllr Barbara Mace: " Woolton's result is the culmination of four years had work and beating all the small picuresque villages in Cheshire and on the Fylde. Gateacre';s achievement is remarkable given the short timescale. I hope this will encourage more areas in Liverpool to enter - particularly in the neighbourhoods".
