The results of the by elections in both Leicester South and Birmingham Hodge Hill show Laboour voters are deserting the party in droves and coming across to the Liberal Democrats, according to Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesperson, Paula Keaveney.
Friday's (16th July) results were a win in Leicester South for the Lib Dems and a narrow loss in Birmingham Hodge Hill. Both constituencies had been considered safe Labour seats. In both the Conservative candidates were pushed into third place. In both the swing from Labour to Lib Dems was more than 20 percent.
Says Paula Keaveney: "On the basis of those swings, the Lib Dems would win Parliamentary seats in both Liverpool Garston and Wavertree".
